June 27th, 2023 New Book Releases

This week’s releases are all about the ladies, with just a few men sprinkled in. With two historical fictions, two romances, and one contemporary, we can explore how powerful women affected history, read about emotional and unseen labor in heterosexual marriages, and wind down with some witty banter between enemies-to-lover actors. Here’s every release from June 27th, 2023 that I’m excited to read.

The Beach at Summerly by Beatriz Williams

The Beach at Summerly

Author: Beatriz Williams

Genre: Historical Fiction

Beatriz Williams is the author of many books, including The Lost Summers of Newport and Our Woman in Moscow. She write primarily historical fiction. I like a good historical fiction book myself, so if this one turns out to be good, I’ll likely read through the rest of her novels.

The Beach at Summerly takes place in 1946 and 1954. It first tells the story of Emilia Winthrop and her developing friendship with Olive Rainsford, and her romance with Shep, Olive’s nephew. That summer, an FBI agent arrives and Emilia becomes involved in a plot to arrent a Soviet agent. Eight years later, she’s sucked back into the drama and summoned to fulfil orders surrounding the Soviet agent.

The First Ladies by Marie Benedict

The First Ladies

Author: Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

Genre: Historical Fiction

I’ve read a couple other Marie Benedict books, like The Mitford Affair, and thought they were all pretty good. Her name is one I usually trust for an interesting and well-written read.

The First Ladies covers the friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune and how that friendship affected American society. This story shows how the two women worked together to thwart white supremists and advance the civil rights movement.

The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

The Seven Year Slip

Author: Ashley Poston

Genre: Romance

Ashley Poston is the New York Times Bestselling author of The Dead Romantics. Her last novel was a Good Morning America book club pick.

This summer, I’m looking for some good, easy-to-read, romance novels. The Seven Year Slip seems to be a perfect pick, as it weaves a romantic time-travel love story. Clementine, the main character, is a down-on-her-luck book publicist who’s visiting her aunt when she meets the man of her dreams in her aunt’s kitchen. The only problem lies in time: dream man is from seven years in the past.

Will They or Won’t They by Ava Wilder

Will They or Won’t They

Author: Ava Wilder

Genre: Romance

Ava Wilder is a fairly new author, with How to Fake It in Hollywood as her only other title. A Midwesterner and cat mom, Ava Wilder specializes in high-stake romance.

This book was immediately appealing to me, based on the cover, the description, and the premise. This is a classic enemies to lovers that follows two actors. They play a head-over-heels in-love (but not together, just pining) couple in the show, but can’t stand one another in real life. The inevitable conclusion of Will They or Won’t They is pretty obvious—they will—but it’s how they get there that I’m interested to see.

The Wife App by Carolyn Mackler

The Wife App

Author: Carolyn Mackler

Genre: Contemporary

Carolyn Mackler is the author of many other books, many of which are YA. These include Not If I Can Help It and Best Friend Next Door.

The Wife App seems to be a bit of a divergence from Mackler’s typical stuff. It’s an adult contemporary fiction that tells the story of three women who decide they’re done with unseen, unappreciated emotional labor. They create an app that monetizes this labor, and it blows up. The story follows the three women as they deal with their personal experiences, ex-husbands, and friendship.
